Yeah, this is kinda horrible :/

Isn't there something that can be done? Maybe block new users from starting multiple threads a day or something? It wouldn't stop the spambots, but it would stop the annoying pages and pages of spam threads.

If I remember correctly, tweaking the registering captcha and other registering questions works to keep bots away(mainly because they seem to learn how to answer this questions and changing them therefore forces them to restart the whole process). It needs to be done again after a certain period of time but usually you can say bye to the bots after that.

Oh my god, this is really bad.

I'm currently looking for solutions. I'll try to change the Captcha for logins.

This is mainly the reason why I shutdown my phpBB forum. The only workaround I found was changing the captcha system with something unique like you make your own questions. However, this will only work for a while and the bot will find a way again to register the forum, then you need to change the captcha Q&A again (unless there are other effective methods). Wanted to use vBulletin but it is very expensive, LOL.

Some solutions

Hey there.

Thanks for the link. I actually read that forum post myself.
I think we'll probably have to come up with a complex question that hopefully won't be broken too soon.
For now I just added an impossibly long keyword that needs to be entered. That means effectively it's impossible to register now unless people write us an E-Mail to ask for the keyword. I'll keep it that way for a while just to test if that actually helps.

If the bots manage to get around that as well, all is lost.

Cheers,

Felix
