I think part of the problem is that we sometimes forget to ban the ip's too. We just delete the user + posts. A more complex question for CrossCode (like "how is the ship Lea finds herself in called?") + making sure we ban the ip too would help. (some info I got from our friends on another forum which is pretty big)

Without reading the Link vom TheXtremeS here are some suggestions that could help:

1. Not only one captcha but a whole shitload of them
2. Ridiculous captchas like...
2a. Check the wrong answer. Are you []human []bot ? (checking "bot" will let you pass.
2b. Leave this captcha blank if you are human. (here could be some math oder other easy to solve for bots things.)
3. Don't write the questions and tasks in the sourcecode of the webpage. Write them in pictures so bots have it a little harder to read them. But blind people who use a screenreader will be screwed. For the pictures you should use bitmaps and vectorgraphics alike to make it even harder for the bots.

These are just suggestions and I have no idea if it's even possible to implement some of them or how helpful they actually are.
Warning, my comments might contain Sarcasm, irony, cynicism and black humour.

Another forum I frequent also has phpBB installed, and they use a program called Bad Behavior to curb a lot of spambots. It seems to work fairly well.
